Last month, Intermar Shipping N.V. had the pleasure of hosting the students of Ocean View Academy for an educational field trip that opened the door to the real world of shipping, logistics, and maritime operations in St. Maarten.
For many of these students, it was their first close-up look at the infrastructure that keeps goods flowing to our island—and it all began with a warm welcome from George Pelgrim, owner of Intermar Shipping and one of the longest-standing figures in St. Maarten’s commercial history.
A Legacy of 40 Years in Caribbean Shipping
Intermar Shipping recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of service within the Caribbean shipping network. Under the leadership of George Pelgrim, the company has grown into a multi-service logistics powerhouse, supporting not only St. Maarten but neighboring islands across the region.
His story—from Intermar’s early days to the large-scale, modern operation it is today—gave students real insight into entrepreneurship, leadership, and the importance of reliable maritime services for island economies.
Learning “The World of Shipping”
After the introduction, students enjoyed an engaging presentation titled “The World of Shipping” by Mr. Gomez, covering:
- How global cargo movement works
- Why shipping is essential for St. Maarten’s economy
- The roles of freight forwarders, port handlers, vessel agents, and logistics coordinators
- How container ships, cargo vessels, and cruise ships are serviced
- The importance of maritime safety, port efficiency, and strong supply-chain systems
The presentation helped bridge the gap between what students see on store shelves and the complex logistics chain behind every product.
A Behind-the-Scenes Tour of Port Operations
Intermar then provided students with a rare, behind-the-scenes walkthrough of its operations:
- Major equipment used for cargo handling, container transport, and mechanical operations
- How thousands of packages and shipments are processed, sorted, and delivered
- The coordination between shipping lines, trucking, warehousing, and port logistics
- A visit to the docks to watch ships being unloaded in real time
- A close-up look at a cruise ship Intermar helps provision—one of the most exciting moments of the day
This hands-on experience made the island’s maritime network come alive for the students.
Community, Education, and a Shared Lunch
The day wrapped up with lunch at The Greenhouse, where students discussed everything they’d seen—from cargo cranes to ship agents to the importance of reliable logistics partners like Intermar Shipping.
Ocean View Academy’s students showed curiosity, discipline, and enthusiasm throughout the tour. They represented their school with pride and professionalism.
